City dwellers come up with graft complaints in Chattogram public hearing

City dwellers vented their anger, frustration and concern over corruption in Chattogram City Corporation during a public hearing on corruption eradication on Monday.

Anti-Corruption Commission organised the public hearing at Bir Uttam Shah Alam Auditorium of Chittagong Medical College.

ACC commissioner (investigation) AFM Aminul Islam and city mayor AJM Nasir Uddin were present during the programme, which was 131st of its kind organised by the commission.

A victim Zanel Alam said he gave a city corporation revenue officer Tk 33 lakh to get a plot at Lake City project which was initiated on 2000, but he did not get the allotment.

Mayor Nasir Uddin said as a citizen he should not give money in wrong way for anything.

He said that the victim filed a case and they were waiting for the judgment.

CCC suspended the revenue officer for his involvement in many irregularities.

CCC had already handed over 548 plots to the owners, he also added.

ACC commissioner ordered the city corporation to resolve the case quickly and try to compensate the victim.

Another victim Nurul Karim of Shulakbahar area alleged that CCC executive engineer Sudip Basak’s brother Sumon Basak got the work order of a government project of CCC involving Tk 80 lakh though Sumon was not the lowest bidder.

ACC commissioner AFM Aminul Islam ordered the corporation to remove Sumon Basak from contractor’s list and take action against Sudip Basak as it was prohibited in government job rules.

A total of 68 complaints were filed.

People who filed the complaints were mostly absent in the hearing.

ACC filed five teams to collect he complaints for the hearing. Citizens’ filed many complaints against the officials of engineering and revenue department of CCC.

Additional divisional commissioner Nurul Alam Nizami said due to the corrupt people and their illegal activities people were not getting proper service from agencies.
