Police arrested a Juba League leader on Friday at Majherghat in Patiya of Chattogram for posting statements on Facebook against whip Shamsul Haque Chowdhury and his son Nazmul Karim Chowdhury.
The arrestee was Jamir Uddin, 45, the former joint convener of Patiya Upazila unit Juba League.
Immediate after his arrest on Friday night, locals brought out a procession demanding the release of Jamir on Chattogram-Cox’s Bazar Highway.
On October 10, local Chhatra League leader Abu Sayed Tanvir filed a case against Jamir Uddin with Patiya policve station under Digital Security Act.
Patiya police officer-in-charge Borhan Uddin said Jamir was also facing several more cases including murder, hijacking.

Earlier on September 26, police Inspector Mahmud Saiful Amin was suspended four days after his Facebook post where he claimed that the whip and some police officials collected money from a gambling racket in Chattogram. He had claimed whip Shamsul Haque Chowdhury also general secretary of Chattogram Abahani Limited, has collected Tk 180 crore over the last five years.
Amid the ongoing drives against casinos, RAB 7 raided Chattogram Abahani Limited club at Halishahar on September 21.
The next day, Shamsul criticised the raid saying if young people were not allowed to play cards at clubs, they might engage in petty crimes like mugging.
A rift emerged in the Chattogram Awami League over whip Shamsul’s alleged patronisation of gambling and his son’s issuing threat to a senior party leader.
Shamsul and his son Nazmul were drawing flak from several AL leaders over the issues. A clip of a telephone conversation between Nazmul and Didarul Alam Chowdhury, youth and sports affairs secretary of Chattogram AL, also went viral on social media.
