Land minister Saifuzzaman Chowdhury on Saturday said the present condition of the river Karnaphuli was very dreadful feared that the river would not survive in future if such situation continues.
The minister at a discussion on encroachment of Karnaphuli and immediate capital dredging urged all to take immediate and coordinated moves to save the river from encroachment and pollution.
Channel i organised the programme at Abhay Mitra Ghat in Chattogram to mark its 20th anniversary.
The minister said Bangladesh was experiencing 7-8 per cent growth and the reserve was also increased. ‘But, if we cannot change our mindset, all these success would not sustain,’ he said.
Saifuzzman said Chittagong Port Authority has many responsibilities towards the river and capital dredging of the river was very important.
He also advised Chittagong Port Authority chairman to prepare a manual for using the river after consulting stakeholders. He said Karnaphuli was the life line of the country’s economy. ‘We need to relocate the industries along the banks of the river to stop discharging liquid wastes.’
Chattogram mayor AJM Nasir Uddin said in his four years tenure he found poor cooperation and involvement of citizens in development works.
Daily Azadi editor MA Malek said polythene layers halting capital dredging of the river and suggested to demolishing the polythene factories not just sealing them off during drives.
Chittagong Port Authority chairman Rear Admiral Zulfiqur Aziz, Chattogram Development Authority charman Zohirul Alam Dobash, CWASA managing director AKM Faizullah, Karnaphuli researcher Idris Ali, Halda researcher Monzurul Kibria, Architect Ashiq Imran also spoke at the meeting.
Karnaphuli Banchao Andolan convener Aliur Rahman presented the key note paper and Channel i’s bureau chief Chowdhury Farid delivered welcome speech.
