The NGO Affairs Bureau has given registrations to 1,445 foreign-funded non-government organisations in the last sixteen years, agriculture minister Matia Chowdhury, also in charge of the prime minister’s office in parliament, informed the house on Tuesday.
Between January 2001 and December 2016, registration of 90 NGOs was cancelled on different grounds, Matia said while replying to a question of independent lawmaker Abdul Matin.
Scripted answer of Matia shows that registration of 88 NGOs was cancelled in 2010 and one each in 2014 and 2016.
It also shows that 75 NGOs got registration in 2016 and 372 NGOs got registration between 2011 and 2015, 565 NGOs got registration between 2006 and 2010, 343 NGOs got registration between 2001 and 2005.
NGO Affairs Bureau officials said that government cancelled the registration NGOs for their involvement in corruption, misuse of foreign funds and patronisation of militancy.
