Leaders and activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal sat on the floor of Madhu’s Canteen at Dhaka University protesting at Bangladesh Chhatra League’s occupying all the tables at the abode of student politics on Thursday.

Usually all the student bodies active at Dhaka University run organisational activities from separate tables at the canteen, Chhatra League leaders and activists after formation of Chhatra Dal’s new committee were on a move to shrink space for Chhatra Dal at the canteen.

The activists of the ruling party’s student wing occupied all the tables at the canteen early in the morning leaving no space for other organisations on Thursday.

Activists of Chhatra Dal, associate body of students of Bangladesh Nationalist Party, came to the canteen around 10:00am led by its general secretary Iqbal Hossain Shyamal but found no table or chair to sit.

Protesting at the act of Chhatra League, Iqbal and other Chhatra Dal activists sat down on the floor of the canteen.

Activists of both the organisations chanted heated slogans but nothing untoward happened.

Chhatra Dal general secretary Iqbal Hossain Shyamal later told media they came to the canteen like other days but Chhatra League occupied all the tables so they sat on the floor.

He said it was Chhatra League’s political misconduct and the scenario was almost same at all educational institutions across the country.

Chhatra League acting president Al Nahian Khan Joy rejected the allegation of occupying tables. ‘We assemble at the canteen as per regular our activities and if anyone gets no space coming later, we have nothing to do,’ he said.

Later, Chhatra Dal activists brought out a procession on the campus protesting the attacks on their fellows at Jagannath University.

At least six Chhatra Dal activists were injured in an attack allegedly by Chhatra League activists at Jagannath University in the morning.

Some Chhatra League activists led by Al Sadik Hridoy attacked a procession of Chhatra Dal at around 10:00am leaving six activists injured. Chhatra Dal brought out the procession protesting at removing a plaque inscribing the name of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia from the university administrative building.

The injured were Abdur Rashid, Rokonuzzaman Jitu,  Sabuj Hossain and Jamula Uddin of economics department, Abid Hasan Rubel of Sociology department, and Mahfuzur Rahman, a former central leader of Chhatra Dal. The attackers also took Abdur Rashid to the university proctor’s office and later the proctorial team handed him over to Kotwali police.

The university unit Chhatra Dal president Rafikul Islam said they lodged complaint with the university proctor verbally demanding steps against the attackers. He said proctor Mustofa Kamal assured them of reestablishing plaque within two days and ensuring congenial environment on the campus for all, probing Thursday’s attack take action against the attackers.

Al Sadik Hridoy later told New Age as a student and Chhatra League activist it was his duty not to allow anything that hamper academic atmosphere on the campus. The processionists were not running students of the university, he added.
