A suspected drug peddler was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with police at Nalkakra in Tarakanda upazila on early Friday.

The deceased was Abdul Karim, 45, son of Akkas Ali of the village. He was wanted in 15 criminal cases, said the police sources.

Tipped off  that some ‘drug peddlers’ gathered in the area for drug trading, a team of police raided the area around 2:30am, said Shah Kamal Akand, officer-in-charge of Tarakanda police station.

Sensing presence of the law enforcers, the criminals opened fire on them, forcing them to fire back in self-defence.

After a brief gunfight, police recovered the body of Karim while others managed to flee the scene.

One pipe gun and 200 grams of heroin were seized from the spot, the OC added.
