Two suspected drug pedlars cum robbers were killed in separate gunfights with Rapid Action Battalion in Gazipur and Narayanganj on early Wednesday.
The dead are Masud Pervez, 34, of village Barmi under Sripur in Gazipur and Tuhin Hossain, 23, of Deobhog Shantinagar at Fatulla in Narayanganj, police and RAB officers said.
They said that Masud was named in 14 cases, including seven for robbery and five for drug trade, while Tuhin was named in at least four cases, including one for murder and rest for drug peddling, they said.
With the two suspected drug peddlers, the death toll during the on-going anti-drug drives since May 15, 2018 has risen to 453, according to media reports.
The New Age correspondent in Gazipur, quoting assistant superintendent of police Kamruzzaman of RAB-1, reported that Masud was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with members of Rapid Action Battalion at Satkhamair of Sripur in Gazipur early Wednesday.
Tipped-off, a team of RAB-1 conducted a drive in the area around 2:30am and suspected robbers cum drug pedlars opened fire on RAB personnel, forcing RAB to retaliate by firing, triggering a gunfight.
Pervez was killed in the ‘gunfight’ and they seized five shotguns, a pistol, a gun and 13 cartridges cases from the spot.
The New Age correspondent in Narayanganj, quoting assistant superintendent of police Moshiur Rahman of RAB-11, reported that RAB arrested Tuhin from Debidwar in Cumilla on early Wednesday and as per information extracted from him went to Syedpur area of Sadar upazila in Narayanganj along with Tuhin to seize illegal firearms.
The RAB officer said that when they reached the spot, Tuhin’s cohorts opened fire on RAB personnel and RAB also retaliated by firing then Tuhin was shot.
The crimes suspect was immediately taken to Narayanganj general hospital where on-duty doctors declared him dead, the RAB officer claimed.
He said that they seized a pistol and three cartridges from the spot.
