Devotees observed traditional Ganga Snan at Sambalpur ghat in Hemayetpur under Pabna sadar upazila on Monday.

The event is organised every year marking the 132nd birth anniversary of Hindu sage Thakur Anukul Chandra, who asked his devotees to observe Ganga Snan before his death in 1968.

Besides, a two-day festival was organised at Pabna City College field marking the occasion.

Pabna-5 lawmaker Golam Faruk Khandaker Prince, also secretary of AL Pabna district unit, inaugurated the two-day festival. Chairman of Pabna Zila Parishad Rezaur Rahim Lal, former secretary Habibur Rahman Siddique, additional superintendent of police Shamima Akter and Shatshangha organiser Achinta Chandra Das spoke at the event.

The speakers urged upholding Anukul Chandra’s teachings and ideals for the sake of humanity.

‘The devotees observe the traditional Ganga Snan at Sambalpur ghat for the purification of their soul every year. This year the 52nd Ganga Snan festival was organised by Satsangha Bangladesh,’ said Sunil Kumar Paul, organiser of Pabna unit of Satsangha Bangladesh.

‘Though the Sambalpur ghat, once part of the mighty Padma, has been turned into a cannel full of water-hyacinth, the devotees consider it a holy place as Thakur Anukul Chandra used to bathe there before his departure in 1947,’ added Sunil.
