The Election Commission suspended one of its office assistants at the Double Mooring Election office in Chattogram city on Tuesday for his alleged connection in issuing National Identity Cards to Rohingyas by manipulating information.

Police arrested three people including the office assistant of Double Mooring election office Chattogram, Jainal Abedin, at Chattogram on Monday night in this connection. The other arrestees were Bijoy Das, 24, a driver and his sister Sima Das, 26. All are residents of Patiya upazila, Chattogram. Bijoy is the son of Haradhan Das of Patiya. Sima is an employee of Chattogram General Hospital.

Election Commission deputy secretary Ashraful Alam in an order suspended Jainal for his involvement with issuance of NIDs to Rohingyas.

Double Mooring election officer Pallabi Chakma filed a case in Kotwali police on Tuesday morning under Digital Security Act and Election Commission Act against five accused including Jainal.

Kotwali police officer-in-charge Mohammad Mohsin said on information of finding a missing official laptop of the Election Commission, police rushed to Chattogram regional election office and arrested the three at around 11:00pm on Monday.

By using the EC laptop, they made NIDs and uploaded information on national database.

Mohosin said case was filed against five but the identities of two others were yet to be disclosed.

Chattogram Metropolitan Police Counter Terrorism Unit would investigate the matters, he said.

Election Commission deputy director (NID) Iqbal Hossain said that a three-member team of the commission led by him was conducting drives at places of Cox’s Bazar and Chattogram as part of their crackdown on issuance of NIDs to Rohingya refugees.

Chattogram regional election officer Md Hasanuzzaman said in August they arrested one Rohingya woman Lucky Akter and then the commission formed a probe committee. In primary investigation, they came to know that few officials of the commission were involved in the process.

Few days ago, they arrested six in Cox’s Bazar.

As per their information, they interrogated Jainal Abedin who was given an official laptop by the commission. When the investigators asked him about the laptop, he said he had given it to his friend Bijoy Das. ‘So, we asked him to bring Bijoy Das to the commission’s office in Chattogram. Reaching there, Bijoy said the laptop was with his sister Sima. Then we summoned Sima.’

Hasanuzzaman said they then handed over the three to police.

Senior district election officer Md Munir Hossain Khan said using this laptop, they did illegal activities. Few other officials of the commission were also involved in this process and they would traced soon, he said.
