The Awami League-fielded candidate Rejaul Karim Raju withdrew his nomination form on Monday following prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s order.
Rejaul Karim, Rangpur district unit AL general secretary, convinced his supporters who gathered in front of the returning officer’s office and demanded that he continued the race in Rangpur 3 by-poll.
‘I withdrew the form for the national political interest following the directive from the prime minister,’ Rejaul said.
On 7 September, AL district unit office secretary Touhidur Islam Tutul said, ‘We met the prime minster at Ganabhaban and she said that AL might withdraw nomination if a request came from the Jatiya Party which is part of its grand alliance.’
He also said that the prime minister took the decision showing her respect to the deceased JP chairman HM Ershad.
Both JP’s chairman GM Quader and secretary general Mashiur Rahman Ranga told the press several times at the party’s Banani office that negotiation was on with the ruling party AL for keeping only JP-fielded candidate for the seat that fell vacant following JP founder Ershad’s death on July 14.
‘Ershad never lost any election from Rangpur 3 since 1986. So we hope AL would support our candidate,’ Ranga said on Sunday.
Many of Rerjaul’s supporters said they would not continue campaigning anymore while few said they would work for JP-fielded candidate Rahgir Al Mahi Shad.
Shad will vie with BNP’s Rita Rahman, Khelafat Majlish candidate Tauhidur Rhaman Mondol, Ganafront candidate Kazi Shahidullah, National Peoples Party’s Shafiul Alam and independent candidate Hossain Maqbul Asif Shahariar
There are 4,42,072 voters in Rangpur 3 sadar constituency. Of them 2,21,310 were male and 2,20,762 female. Voting will be held in 175 EVM vote centres on October 5.
