Man killed in Kushtia ‘gunfight’

A suspected drug peddler was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with police at Mollteghuria Kanelpara in Kushtia early Friday, police said.

The deceased was identified as Sujon Islam, 32, son of Abul Kashem, resident of the area.

With the latest casualty, the death toll during the on-going anti-drug drive since May 15, 2018 has risen to 448, according to media reports.

Acting on a tipped off, a team of Kushtia police conducted a drive in the area while two groups of drug peddlers were trading gunshots there at around 2:00am, Kushtia police station officer-in-charge Nasir Uddin said.

Sensing the presence of the police personnel, the drug peddlers open fired on police, forcing them to fire back that triggered the gunfight.

After the gunfight, police found Sujon’s bullet-hit body while the other drug peddlers managed to flee the scene.

Later, police recovered Sujon from the spot and took him to Kushtia General Hospital where on duty doctors declared him dead, the police official said.

Four police personnel were also injured during the gunfight. Sujon was wanted in several cases including of drug, the OC claimed.
