The authorities on Thursday withdrew Pabna Sadar Police Station officer-in-charge Obaidul Haque and suspended sub-inspector Ekramul Haque in connection with forced marriage of a rape victim with one of the suspected rapists at the police station on September 6.
Pabna superintendent of police Sheikh Rafiqul Islam said that the OC was attached to Pabna police lines after allegations against the two officers were found true during primary investigation.
He, however, said that the probe committee formed by the district police was yet to submit its report.
The SP said that they also arrested two more accused in connection with the case of raping the woman.
They are Zakir Hossain Driver and Sanju Molla from Tabunia area under Pabna sadar upazila, he added.
The victim was reportedly abducted on early August 30, taken to a local Awami League leader’s office behind Tebunia food warehouse in Pabna sadar upazila and was raped by four people — a local Awami League leader and his three accomplices — in confinement there for four days, according to the primary compliant of the victim.
Pabna deputy commissioner Kabir Mahmud said that they on Thursday, as per direction from the cabinet, formed a three-member probe committee headed by additional district magistrate Zahid Newaz to investigate into the incident.
He said that the committee was asked to submit its reports within three working days.
According to the Pabna police, they have so far arrested Dapunia union AL joint general secretary Shariful Islam Ghantu, a contractor by profession and his associate and AL activist Russel Hossain.
According to the victim’s compliant, Russel and his accomplices abducted her on early August 30, took her to Shariful’s office and Shariful, Russel and their two associates raped her keeping her confined there for four days.
It said that she, being freed from the rapists’ clutch, went to her residence, told it to her relatives who took her to hospital on September 5 evening and later at night went to the police station to lodge the case.
According to the victim’s relatives and sources in the police station, the police, after knowing the names, took AL activist Russel to the police station and called the victim there.
They said that the woman, allegedly on instruction from police, was forced to marry Russel in the police station divorcing her husband on early September 6.
Russel was then set free and the victim was compelled to go to her parent’s home in a village of Sadar upazila, one of the paternal relatives of the victim said.
As the incident was circulated through media reports, the district police authorities issued a show-cause notice to OC Obaidul Haque and formed an investigation committee headed by the additional superintendent of police (headquarters) asking it to submit the report as soon as possible.
According to the police officials, Pabna Sadar police recorded the case as on September 9 as per direction of their high ups.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh Mahila Parishad formed a human chain in front of the Pabna Press Club in the district town on Thursday protesting against the marriage at police station and demanding exemplary punishment for the rapists and the cops responsible for committing the offence.
Apart from the women leaders, representatives of various private development organisations and civil society members participated in the human chain.
