A High Court bench on Wednesday returned the bail petition of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia in the Zia Charitable Trust corruption case saying that another bench summarily rejected her bail.
A vacation bench of Justice Farid Ahmed and Justice ASM Abdul Mobin returned the bail petition to Khaleda’s lawyers.
The bench told Khaleda’s lawyers that a senior HC bench had earlier rejected the bail petition and so it was not possible for the bench to hear the petition again.
The bench, however, said that the lawyers may move an appellate division bench with the petition.
Lawyers prayed for Khaleda’s bail saying that she is seriously ill and is now hospitalised, as she has been suffering from various health complications because of long custody since February 8, 2018.
On July 31, the bench of Justice Obaidul Hassan and Justice SM Kuddus Zaman rejected her bail application showing reasons that she was handed over the highest sentence.
On August 8, 2011, the Anti-Corruption Commission filed the case with Tejgaon police station and on October 29, 2018, a special court in Dhaka sentenced her to seven-year imprisonment.
