JU students stage The Alchemist

Jahangirnagar University drama and dramatics department 2nd year students staged Brazilian novelist Paulo Coelho’s The Alchemist at National Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy on Sunday.

The play, which has been dramatised and directed by Reza Arif, portrays the journey of a shepherd boy named Santiago who finds the existence of God, while in the original novel the boy discovers the Soul of the World.

Santiago starts his journey from Andalusia, a city in Spain, after dreaming about vast treasures hidden inside a pyramid in Egypt.

The play follows the journey of Santiago who comes across various civilizations and cultures while crossing vast deserts and unknown territories to reach Egypt in Africa. However, after Santiago reaches his destination, he is greeted by an alchemist, a mysterious individual who can understand the language of the world and turn any metal to gold.

The alchemist teaches Santiago about the true meaning of life and helps him to break away from earthly desires. The play ends with the dialogue ‘The existence of God lies in me’.
