Police arrested a collage teacher on charge of sexually harassing a female student in Rajshahi on Thursday night.

The accused Sirajul Islam teaches geography at Katakhali Adarsha Collage in the city.

He is a member on Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s Rajshahi district unit convening committee and also former organising secretary of the unit.

Katakhali police station officer-in-charge Zillur Rahman told New Age that the mother of a female student of Katakhali Adarsha Collage filed a case against Sirajul Islam on Thursday night.

Later, Sirajul was arrested on the night and was sent to jail showing arrested in the case, he added.

However, BNP Rajshahi district former organising secretary Golam Mostofa Mamun, also a member on the convening committee, told New Age that Sirajul Islam was arrested only to harass him politically.

‘Sirajul contested against the incumbent mayor Abbas Ali in the last election to Katakhali municipality. Recently, conflicts arose between Abbas and Sirajul following the election to Shaympur High School managing committee where the panel led by Sirajul won all the posts’, he claimed.

Golam Mostofa Mamun also demanded immediate release of Sirajul Islam.

Mayor Abbas Ali was not available for his comment despite repeated attempts.
