An Awami League activist was killed in a reported gunfight with police in Chattogram on early Thursday, hours after he had surrendered to police.

The deceased, Md Belal, 43, son of Abdul Kader of Railway Loco shade Colony of Ambagan area in the port city, was an AL activist and follower of local AL leader and Pahartali ward councillor Mohammad Hossain Hiron, locals and police said.

Belal, wanted in 13 criminal cases including at least one for murder, was a ‘most wanted criminal’ on the list of police and he surrendered to the Khulshi police at about 1:00pm on Wednesday, said Khulshi police station officer-in-charge Pranab Chowdhury.

During his surrender, he promised to give up criminal activities and informed that he had illegal firearms.

According to his information, a police team went to Jalalbad Hill of Khulshi with Belal to retrieve the arms at about 1:00am on Thursday.

As they turned up at the spot, a group of unidentified gunman attacked them to snatch Belal away, the OC said.

Finding no way, cops retaliated by firing which prompted a gunfight, he added.

The police officer said that they, after the shootout, found Belal injured and took him to Chattogram Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead.

Police seized a gun, three cartridges, and four billhooks from the spot, he claimed.
