RMG stakeholders form sustainability council

The Accord on Fire and Building Safety in Bangladesh, the Alliance for Bangladesh Worker Safety, Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association, brands, buyers and trade unions on Tuesday agreed to form RMG Sustainability Council to ensure safety in garment factories.

At a joint statement the stakeholders declared that the council would formally be launched on November 15 and would start functioning on January 15.

RMG Sustainability Council would continue the safety monitoring activities, said insiders.

BGMEA president Rubana Huq said the council in cooperation with the Department of the Inspection of Factories and Establishment would work for ensuring workplace safety.

She hoped that the new platform would work for workplace safety more functional way.   

Industryall Bangladesh Council chairman Kamrul Anan, buyers’ representatives Edward David Southall, and Accord representative Joris Oldeziel, among others, were present at the conference.

After the collapse of Rana Plaza in 2013, workers, brands and buyers formed Accord and Alliance to run inspections in factories to avert further fatal accident at any garment factory.
