The government on Monday withdrew refugee relief and repatriation commissioner Mohammad Abul Kalam from the commissioner’s Cox’s Bazar office and made him an officer on special duty at the public administration ministry.

Md Mahbub Alam Talukdar, a director of the Department of Disaster Management, was made new refugee relief and repatriation commissioner.

The government has asked them to join their respective new post by Thursday. Otherwise, they would be ‘stand released’ from their present position in the afternoon on September 5, said the orders.

The move came a week after Rohingyas had held a  mass gathering inside the refugee camp at Kutupalang of Teknaf in Cox’s Bazar on August 25, marking the anniversary of the beginning of the displaced Myanmar nationals’ influx in Bangladesh feeling ethnic cleansing in Rakhine State.

Abul Kalam, an additional secretary, has been attached to the jute ministry as an OSD, according to an official order issued by the public administration ministry.

Mahbub Alam is a joint secretary to the government.

The government also placed Md Khaliul Rahman Khan, an officer on special duty at the public administration ministry, at the disposal of disaster management and relief ministry for attaching him to the office of the refugee relief and repatriation commissioner in Cox’s Bazar. He is a deputy secretary to the government.

Earlier on Sunday, Shamimul Hoque Pavel, a deputy secretary, who was in charge of 1E, 1W, 3 and 4 extension of Rohingya camp, was  transferred as deputy director of a project under the commerce ministry.

The government was annoyed over the management and operations of the Rohingya camps, insecurity inside camps at night and unwarranted engagement of a section of officials with international and local NGOs for several months, officials said.
