Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Thursday said that the prime minister’s Wednesday comment on television channels in which she claimed that the operators’ were enjoying complete freedom was ‘the lie of the year’.

BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, addressing a press conference at the party central office in Dhaka, mentioned that the PM on Wednesday, while meeting with a representative team of Association of Television Channel Owners at her office, said that all the television channels in Bangladesh was enjoying complete freedom.

‘The prime minister’s comment on freedom enjoyed by the TV channels is “the lie of the year”… media outlets are being closed down for publishing the truth and journalists are facing jail sentences, harassment and are being victims of enforced disappearance. Many were even compelled to leave the country for writing the truth,’ he said.

He alleged that the TV channels were used as propaganda machines of the ruling Awami League while the owners and concerned people couldn’t do anything about it.

The BNP leader said that the party chairperson Khaleda Zia was now seriously ill and alleged that the government was involved in a conspiracy to kill Khaleda.

He also demanded Khaleda’s immediate release.
