Four organisations based in Chittagong Hill Tracts on Tuesday went out on demonstration at Dhaka University protesting at the ‘killing of three activists of United People’s Democratic Front by army in Khagrachari on Monday’.

The Democratic Youth Forum, United Workers’ Front, Pahari Chhatra Parishad and Hill Women’s Federation staged the demonstration.

The Inter Services Public Relation directorate in a release on Monday, however, said, ‘three miscreants of the UPDF (Prasit faction) were killed in the gunfight’ at Baradam in Dighinala of Khagrachari.

The deceased were Nabin Jyoti Chakma, 38, of Merung Betchhari, Bhujendra Chakma, 50, of Indramunipara and Ruchil Chakma alias Rasel, 26, of Hachinsonpur in Khagrachari.

From a rally at Raju memorial monument on the campus, the protesters alleged that state sponsored silent mass-killing was on in hills and the latest killing of three UPDF activists was part of it.

They also claimed that deceased Nabin, Bhujendra and Ruchil were earlier detained by the security forces from the house of Sumon Chakma in Kripapur in Dighinala early Monday and were killed later on the day.

Addressing the rally, Pahari Chhatra Parishad general secretary Sunayan Chakma said the crisis in hill tracts was political and those who want to resolve the crisis by killing in the name of gunfight, enforced disappearance and through other oppressions were making mistakes.

Hill Women’s Federation president Nirupa Chakma alleged, ‘army personnel killed the UPDF activists in the name of gunfight labeling them as notorious terrorist. Those who protested against repression earlier had also embraced the same fate’.

The incident took place three days after another UPDF activist Sumon Chakma was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with an army patrol team in Baghaihat Ujobazar in Baghaichari of Rangamati on August 23.
