Suspected robber killed in ‘gunfight’ with police

A suspected robber was killed and four police personnel were injured in a gunfight between a group of robbers and police in Sylhet early Saturday.

The deceased was identified as Abdus Shahid alias Fulu, 32, son of late Nanu Miah of Dharmadehi in Baralekha of Moulvibazar, police said.

The police said that they conducted a raid at Maricha village at Kajalsar union in Jakiganj at around 2-30am after receiving information that a team of robbers were preparing to commit a robbery in the area.

Sensing the presence police, the robbers opened fire targeting the them and in retaliation police also opened fire triggering a gunfight that injured the suspected robber Fulu and five police personnel, they said.

They also told New Age that one pipe gun, several sharp weapons and tools to break locks were seized from the spot. 

Jakiganj police officer-in-charge Meer Md Abdul Nur confirmed New Age of the incident and said that Fulu was taken to the local upazila health complex after rescuing him from the spot, but the health complex’s on-duty doctor declared him dead on arrival.

He said the injured police personnel, including sub-inspector Kallol Gaswami and Zahirul Islam and assistant sub-inspector Zia Uddin also were given first aid from the health complex.

‘The body of Fulu was sent to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examination,’ the police officer said.

Fulu was wanted in six cases filed with different police stations in Sylhet for robbery and using illegal arms.

Two separate cases were also filed with the Jakinganj police on Saturday on charge of using illegal arms and attacking the police, he added.
