Defending champions Bangladesh made a flying start when they beat Bhutan by 5-2 goals in their opening match of the SAFF Under-15 Championship at the Kalyani Stadium in Kolkata on Friday.

Striker Al Mirad scored a brace while Al-Amin Rahman, Shuvo Sarkar and Emon Islam Babu netted one goal apiece for the winners.

Sonam Jugdrul Chozang and Phub Dorji and Chozang netted one goal each for Bhutan.

Forward Al-Amin opened the account for Bangladesh in the 15th minute but within two minutes defender Chozang levelled the margin for Bhutan.

Mirad doubled the margin for Bangladesh in the 21st minute but Bhutan against restored the parity through defender Phub Dorji in the 32nd minute.

Bangladesh played some attacking football and in the 45th minute substitute midfielder Shuvo netted their third goal. In the second half, both teams produced some good chances but failed to convert those into goals.

In the 80th minute, Al Mirad widened the margin by scoring his second while another substitute midfielder Babu completed the rout by scoring the team’s fifth goal in the stoppage time.

In their next match, Bangladesh will play against Sri Lanka on August 25. They will take on Nepal on August 27 and hosts India on August 29 at the same venue.

Bangladesh’s two-goal hero Al Mirad believed that coach’s instruction after the first half helped them to earn a good result.

‘I feel good today. After the first half, the coach told us to put pressure on the opponents and avoid conceding goals. We just followed his instructions. We’ll do the same thing in the next match against Sri Lanka,’ said Mirad during the post-match press conference.

In the day’s other match, Nepal defeated Sri Lanka by 2-0 goals at the same venue.
