Panic has spread among thousands of Kurigram people living near the banks of rivers as some 25 kilometres of the 210km flood control embankment was washed away in the last three years.

The district is crisscrossed by 16 rivers. Houses and lands of many people living on the banks of Brahmaputra, Teesta, Dharla, Gangadhar and Dudhkumar had been lost to erosion.

This year, flood has damaged about 40km flood control dyke and 1,334km roads. Forty-one bridges were also partially damaged, causing sufferings to the people.

The government has taken many projects to protect the people.

A Tk 27 crore tender was floated for the renovation work of the 52.7km embankment in Ulipur-Chilmari upazilas while the water development board is planning to build 47km embankment in Roumari-Rajibpur upazilas.

Besides, some projects, including the construction of a 105km embankment from Teesta Barrage to Chilmari point with Tk 5,000 crore, have been sent to ECNEC for approval.

Ariful Islam, executive engineer of Kurigram Water Development Board, said a number of projects have been taken to construct new flood control embankments and repair the damaged parts.

‘The residents of the district will get relief once these projects are implemented,’ he said.
