The Hill Women Federation on Tuesday expressed concern over the rape of a Marma woman at Ashulia in Dhaka on August 13 and demanded exemplary punishment to the perpetrators.
In a statement, the federation president Nirupa Chakma and general secretary Monty Chakma said the women in the country especially women in the Chittagong Hill Tracts were passing horrible time for increased repression on women.
‘The ruling quarters use rape as a tool of ethnic cleansing,’ the statement said.
On August 13, four youths — Roni, Joy, Shamim and Razu — entered the house and tried to extort the Marma woman and her husband, accusing them of making alcohol.
As the couple refused, they beat up the couple, and confined the husband in a room. They later raped the woman.
The woman was later admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
The Hill Women Federation also demanded punishment to Shah Alam, the owner of a private clinic in Mymensingh, who tried to rape a Garo girl when she along with five other Garo girls went to the hospital for job interview as nurse on August 19.
