Floods damage 1,000km roads, highways

In the recent spate of flood, around 1,000 kilometres highways and roads under the Roads and Highways Department were damaged, showed official statistics.

Among these dilapidated infrastructures, 195.3km were national highways, 167.6km were regional highways and highest 641km were district roads, according to the department’s control room.

Till Monday, 205.53 km roads were submerged under floodwater, 15.591 km were totally washed-out and shoulders of 0.03 km roads had been destroyed.

Flood also damaged four culverts, two bridges and one pipe culvert.

In this regard, the department on Monday sent a proposal to road transport and bridges ministry to allocate Tk 480.57 crore on urgent basis for long-term repair of the damaged highways and roads.  

Meanwhile, the department also sought Tk 149.95 crore to repair these damaged roads immediately under short-term maintenance work.

RHD superintendent engineer (maintenance circle), Abul Kalam Azad, told New Age that they sent the proposal to the ministry as these were unexpected expenditure.

According to the control room of the department, roads in 31 districts were affected by the flood and the worst affected districts are – Sirajganj, Rangpur, Cox’s Bazar, Naogaon, Kurigram, Pabna, Feni, Chattogram, Jamalpur and Gaibandha.

In Sirajganj total 185.74 km, in Rangpur 88.5 km, in Cox’s Bazar 79 km, in Naogaon 78.921 km, in Kurigram 72.4 km, in Pabna 71.65 km, in Feni 57.335 km, in Chattogram 40 km, in Jamalpur 39.85 km and in Gaibandha 32.48 km highways and roads were damaged.

Besides these1 districts, 30.6 km road damaged in Sherpur, in Sunamganj 30 km, in Lakshmipur 25.45 km, in Rajshahi 27 km, in Rangamati 22 km, in Khagrachhari 20 km, in Chattogram 20 km, in Bandarban 18.7 km, in Khulna 15.7 km, in Bogura10 km, in Sylhet 10 km, in Netrakona 6.055 km, in Tangail 6 km, in Kishoreganj 0.6 km, in Mymensingh 2.5 km, in Moulvibazar 2.33 km, in Habiganj 7 km, in Faridpur 2 km, in Bagerhat 1.4 km, in Natore 0.7 km and in Lalmonirhat 0.037 km roads were damaged.

In cases of highways, in Rangpur highest 44 km national highways were damaged followed by 33.75 km in Sirajganj, 27 in Cox’s Bazar, 25.7 km in Feni and 17.2 km in Kurigram. 

Highest 60.65 km regional highways damaged by flood in Pabna followed by 20.171 km in Naogaon, 14.55 km in Jamalpur and 12 km in Rangamati.

In Sirajganj highest 152 km district roads were damaged followed by 58.75 km in Naogaon, 79 km in Cox’s Bazar, 40 km in Chattogram and 72.4 km in Kurigram.

RHD control room executive engineer Munir Hossain said that maintenance works were ongoing to keep the roads passable.

According to the department in 2019-20 fiscal the department was allocated around Tk 2,550 crore to maintain and repair the highways and roads.
