Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Sunday said that it did a mistake while briefing the press about a ‘decision’ on the party chairperson Khaleda Zia’s release and proper treatment after Saturday’s standing committee meeting at the party chief’s office at Gulshan in Dhaka.
The party made the disclaimer in a press release signed by the party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Sunday.
‘As per the agenda, a long discussion on proper treatment and release of BNP chairperson and former prime minister Khaleda Zia was held in the Bangladesh Nationalist Party standing committee meeting on Saturday,’ the release read.
‘Discussion was held about presenting the problem internationally, especially to governments and related institutions of democratic countries. But no final decision was taken. Yesterday ((Saturday), while briefing the press after the meeting, it was mistakenly said that the decision was taken,’ the statement also read.
In Saturday’s briefing, Fakhrul said, ‘For health issue and release of the party chairperson, we have decided to take steps internationally. We will inform the democratic countries how she has been detained in jail through unjust methods. We will take appropriate measures in this regard.’
The BNP secretary general had said that they, after a court’s denial to grant Khaleda bail before the Eid-ul-Azha, were now in firm belief that the courts were not functioning normally and that they were not sure whether they would get justice as the government was controlling the court.
