Asian Paper Mill shut for Halda pollution

The Department of Environment ordered shutting down Asian Paper Mill for allegedly polluting the Halda River at Nandirhat point in Hathazari upazila of Chattogarm.

After a hearing on Sunday, Chattogram DoE director Azadur Rahman Mallick passed the order.

DoE assistant director Sangjukta Das said the DoE ordered Asian Paper Mills to arrange proper solid waste management system and effluent treatment plant immediately to resume operation of the mills.

A DoE team, led by laboratory director Nurullah Nuri, visited the Halda River at Nandirhat point of Hathazari upazila on August 14. During the visit, they noticed that the paper mill was passing waste into the river water.

DoE served a notice to the paper mill.

Earlier on May 27, another team of DoE visited the same point and found the same pollution and fined the paper mill Tk 20 lakh for polluting river Halda.
