Bangladesh Nationalist Party arranged prayer sessions across the country on Friday for the party president Khaleda Zia’s early recovery from diseases and release from jail to mark her 75th birth anniversary.

Thursday was the 75th birth anniversary of Khaleda who has been in jail since February 8, 2018 when a Dhaka special court sentenced her in a graft case. She is now undergoing treatment at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical College Hospita where she was shifted from Old Dhaka Central Jail.

In Dhaka, BNP arranged a prayer session at its central office at Naya Paltan in the morning and another at the party chairperson’s office at Gulshan in the afternoon.

The party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, addressing at the prayer session at the party central office, alleged that the party chairperson was imprisoned out of the government’s political vengeance and said that tough movement was needed to free her.

‘It is unfortunate that we could not launch such a movement through which we could bring her out of jail. We know the role of courts and what they are doing. That is why, there is no other way without movement by organising ourselves to free her,’ he said.

He alleged that the government had kept Khaleda, who fought for democracy throughout her life, in jail as per the government’s conspiracy to make the country’s economy a dependent and vacuous one would not be possible if she was free.

He claimed that Khaleda had established the base of the country’s economic development when she was prime minister.

He alleged that conspiracy was on to make the country a dependent one and that the government had advanced a lot in this regard.

Fakhrul alleged that the government had once destroyed the country’s jute sector and now was destroying the leather sector.

‘Rawhides arrive in the markets just after Eid. Foreign currencies are earned through hide industries,’ he said, alleging that the government was destroying the leather industries in a planned way.

BNP standing committee members Moudud Ahmed, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Nazrul Islam Khan and Selima Rahman,  vice-chairmen Shamsuzzaman Dudu, AZM Zahid Hossain, Nitai Roy Chowdhury, Shawkat Mahmud and senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, among others, were present.
