Two accused in a case of raping a 12-year-old schoolgirl on the eve of Eid-ulAzha were killed in a ‘gunfight’ with police at Rajapur flood protection embankment in Bhola early Wednesday, police said.

The deceased, Al-Amin, 25, and Manjur Alam, 30, both residents of Charsamaia union in Bhola, were also suspected robber and wanted in drug related cases with Bhola police station.

Bhola sadar police station officer-in-charge Md Sagir Mia told New Age that a team of police was on raids in Rajapur area to arrest robbers. Hearing gunshots nearby, they advanced towards place of occurrence at Rajapur flood protection embankment at about 2:30am.

He said that two groups of pirates were trading gunshots over sharing their booty.

The OC said that when police reached near the place, the suspected robbers opened fire on them, forcing the police personnel to retaliate with firing that triggered a gunfight.

At one stage, the pirates fled away by trawlers and police searched the area and found two bullet-hit ‘unidentified’ suspected pirates and rushed them to Bhola General Hospital where on-duty doctors declared them dead.

He said that the locals then identified the duo as Al-Amin and Manjur, both accused in a case of raping a 12-year-old schoolgirl in the district town on the night before the Eid-ul-Azha.

The police officer said that the rape victim was now undergoing treatment at Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital in Barishal where she was referred from Bhola General Hospital on Tuesday as her condition deteriorated.

The victim was raped allegedly by the duo with the help of another youth Jamal on Sunday evening when she went to the house of a neighbour to beautify her with Mehedi her father bought for her on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha.
