Dhaka University Central Students’ Union vice-president Nurul Huq Nur came under attack allegedly by a group of leaders of Bangladesh Chhatra League and Awami Juba League at Ulania in Galachipa of Patuakhali on Wednesday.
He came under attack while he, along with his companions, was going to Dashmina town by motorcycles to visit his sister from his village home at Char Biswas of Galachipa, witnesses said.
The attackers swooped on Nurul when he entered a shop and beat up him and his companions mercilessly, they said, adding that at least five of his companions were injured in the attack.
On information, a police team from Galachipa police station rushed the spot, rescued him and took him to Galachipa upazila health complex where he took primary treatment.
Akhter Hossain, Galachipa police station officer-in-charge, said Nurul and his companions were attacked at Ulania but they were yet to know the identity of the attackers.
Ibrahim Hawlader, father of Nurul said, Nurul celebrate Eid-Ul-Azha with family at Char Biswas and on Wednesday noon he started for Dashmina town with his some friends and students leaders to visit his sister and brother-in-law Mizanur Rahman. ‘When he was crossing Ulania bridge, a gang attacked him.’
Md Fahim, a student of Hazi Danesh Science and Technical University and also a companion of Nurul in the journey, said the attackers beat up Nurul with iron rod, sticks and then they confined him into a shop.
Hearing the news Hafizur Rahman, senior assistant superintendent of police for Patuakhali sadar circle and Akhter Hossain, Galachipa police station OC rushed to the spot and rescued Nurul and brought him to Galachipa upazila health complex, he said.
He took primary treatment there and then left for his village home, he said.
Nurul could not be reached for comments but one his companions Rubel who identified himself as a student of Suhrwardy College alleged that a joint gang of local Chhatra League and Juba League attacked them.
Sharif Ahmed Asif, secretary for Galachipa upazila unit Chhatra League denied involvement of Chhatra League in the attack. He claimed Chhatra League rather helped police to rescue him and taking him to hospital.
No case was filed and none was arrested in this connection, the Galachipa OC said.
