They exchanged Eid greetings with friends, neighbours and relatives and distributed meat among them and the needy.

Eid-ul-Azah is celebrated on the 10th of Zil-Hajj according to the Hijri calendar to commemorate the sacrifice offered by Prophet Ibrahim (AS) 4,000 years ago.

The country’s main Eid congregation was held at National Eidgah in the capital at 8:00am, where president Abdul Hamid said his Eid prayers along with Supreme Court judges, diplomats, senior civil and military officials and prominent citizens.

The country’s biggest Eid congregations were held at Sholakia Eidgah Maidan in Kishoreganj and Gor-e-Shaheed Eidgah Maidan in Dinajpur attended by thousands of devotees.

At all the congregations divine blessings were sought for peace and prosperity of the country as well as the Muslim Ummah. Divine blessings were also sought to get rid of the dengue menace from the country.

Thousands of devotees offered their Eid prayers at five congregations at Baitul Mukarram National Mosque since 7:00am.

Imprisoned Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson Khaleda Zia passed the Eid day at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University in Dhaka where six of his family members met on the day.

Important public and private buildings were illuminated in the capital and elsewhere on the occasion.

Newspaper offices remained closed during the vacation but news updates were available online.

All the radio and TV networks ran special programmes.

Eid was, however, celebrated on Sunday by a small number of believers at places in Chattogram and Barisal divisions, New Age correspondents reported.

Millions of people who have left the capital and other major cities for their homes to celebrate Eid with their near and dear ones have begun to return to the cities.
