Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association on Monday launched its pilot programme of wage payment to the garment workers of its member factories digitally through disbursing festival allowances to 150 workers.
BGMEA and Information and Communication Technology Division of the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology on June 27, signed a memorandum of understanding to introduce the digital wage payment system named ‘e-wallet’ for the sector.
Under the programme, a total of 150 garment workers of three factories registered with the trade body received festival allowance on Monday.
During the MoU signing ceremony BGMEA president Rubana Huq said a pilot project would be taken to introduce RMG Digital Wallet within three months.
The digital wallet is a platform for digitised wage disbursement system.
Workers were trained on how to open accounts through mobile apps and its use, and workers will be able to transfer their wages to their other accounts or can cash out through Bkash, Rocket and Nagad money transfer service.
BGMEA sources said that workers would enjoy financial security as digital wallet brought opportunities like online shopping, online bill payment, transaction and more.
The digital wallet will help workers to develop their ‘credit profile’ which will allow them (workers) to get bank loans during crisis periods, sources said.
