Dhaka University students on Saturday formed a human chain on the campus protesting against a move to demolish the Teachers-Students Center wall of the university.
Metro Rail authority on Saturday began preparatory work for demolishing the TSC wall adjacent to Raju Memorial Monument to Doyel Square to widen the road.
Students from different department including Dhaka University Central Student Union member Tanvir Hasan Shaikat, Mahmudul Hasan joined the human chain at the base of Raju memorial monument .
The students were holding banners that read ‘Don’t destroy TSC, Don’t destroy heritage’, ‘No station inside DU campus’ etc.
They also demanded immediate stoppage of the destructive activities and urged the administration to take necessary steps.
They also warned to wage tougher movement if the authorities ignored their demands.
Dhaka University proctor Golam Rabbani told New Age that it was previously planned and the demolition was part of the plan but it would not harm the TSC largely.
The metro rail, beginning from Uttara Phase III, passes through Farmgate, Sonargaon Hotel, TSC of Dhaka University, Curzon Hall, National Press Club, Bangladesh Bank, Atish Dipankar Road and Sayedabad.
Earlier on 2016, Dhaka University students took the streets demanding that the metro rail alignment should not run through the university saying that the historical places and sculptures would lose their attraction and beauty if the metro rail goes through the DU campus.
The university administration and government did not pay any heed to the students that time.
