Price of green chilli shoots up, garlic keeps surging

The price of green chilli shot up to Tk 160 a kilogram in the Dhaka city’s kitchen markets over the week ending Friday.

Some other spices including garlic, cardamom and cinnamon witnessed an increase in their prices in the city markets ahead of Eid-ul-Azha, one of biggest religious festivals of the Muslims, to be celebrated early next month.

Traders said that the price of green chilli increased due to a supply shortage as recent floods in the different parts of the country damaged farmland.

They also said that wholesalers raised the prices of some other spices including garlic in the city markets.

The price of green chilli increased by Tk 80 a kg and the item was selling for Tk 150-60 a kg on Friday.

The prices of garlic increased afresh by Tk 20 a kg over the week after a recent surge. Garlic imported from China was retailing at Tk 170-180 a kg while its local variety was selling for Tk 140 a kg in the city’s kitchen markets.

The price of cardamom increased by Tk 200-300 a kg and the item was selling for Tk 2,600-3,000 a kg while the price of cinnamon increased by Tk 50 a kg and the item was selling for Tk 400 a kg in the city markets on Friday.

The prices of onions remained high over the week. Its local variety was selling for Tk 50-55 a kg on Friday while the imported variety was selling for Tk 40-45 a kg in the city markets on the day.

The prices of vegetables also remained high over the week.

Aubergine was selling for Tk 50-70 a kg, papaya for Tk 40 a kg, bitter gourds for Tk 60 a kg, bottle gourds for Tk 50-60 apiece, cucumber for Tk 50-60 a kg and tomatoes for Tk 40-80 a kg on Friday.

The price of eggs remained high and the item was selling for Tk 40 a hali (four pieces) on the day.

Potato price remained unchanged over the week and the item was selling for Tk 20-25 a kg in the city’s kitchen markets.

The prices of ginger remained high. Its local variety was selling for Tk 150-180 a kg and the imported variety for Tk 180-200 a kg on Friday.

The retail prices of edible oil remained unchanged over the week.

A one-litre container of soya bean oil was selling for Tk 100-102 and a five-litre container for Tk 490-500 on Friday.

Unpacked soya bean oil was selling for Tk 90-95 a kg, while palm oil was retailing at Tk 80 a kg.

Refined and imported sugar was selling for Tk 60-65 a kg, while the locally produced sugar was selling for Tk 70 a kg in the city markets.

The price of broiler chicken increased by Tk 10 a kg over the week. The item was selling for Tk 140-145 a kg in the city markets and the locally bred hens were selling for Tk 500 a kg.

The prices of fish remained high in the city markets over the week.

Rohita was selling for Tk 300-450 a kg and Katla for Tk 300-400 a kg, depending on their size and quality.

Pangas was selling for Tk 160-210 a kg and Tilapia for Tk 160-200 a kg.

Beef was selling for Tk 550-570 a kg in the city markets while mutton was selling for Tk 750-800 a kg on Friday.

Fine-quality packaged salt was selling for Tk 38 a kg, while the refined variety of salt was retailing at Tk 25 a kg.

The coarse variety of imported red lentil was selling for Tk 70-75 a kg while its fine variety was selling for Tk 100-110 a kg.

The prices of rice remained unchanged over the week.

The coarse variety of rice was selling for Tk 38-40 a kg while BR-28 rice was retailing at Tk 44-50 a kg in the city markets on Friday.

The fine variety of Miniket rice was selling for Tk 58-63 a kg while its coarse variety was retailing at Tk 52-55 a kg.

The fine variety of Najirshail rice was retailing at Tk 60-65 a kg and its standard variety at Tk 56-58 a kg.
