Threatening Anu Muhammad condemned

Leaders of Socialist Party of Bangladesh and Ganasamhati Andolan on Wednesday expressed concern over demanding extortion from Jahangirnagar University professor Anu Muhammad and condemned the incident.

A caller, using an Indian telephone number on Tuesday, phoned noted economist Anu Muhammad and demanded toll threatening him that his family members would face enforced disappearance if he failed to pay the demanded money.

Anu Muhammad, a professor of economics and member secretary of the National Committee to Protect Oil Gas Mineral Resources Power and Ports, said that a caller from number +918017822725 called him at about 10:00am on Tuesday and introduced himself as Subrata Bain.

Anu said that the caller said that he once was a top terror and now staying in Kolkata and demanded money for treatment of his younger brethren.

‘The caller threatened me of showing how he can realise the money from me. He threatened that members of my family will have to face enforced disappearance in case of my failure to pay the demanded money,’ Anu Muhammad said.

SPB general secretary Khalequzzaman and Ganasamhati chief coordinator Zonayed Saki and acting executive coordinator Abul Hassan Rubel in separate press statements called on the government to find out the criminal and give him exemplary punishment, and to ensure security of Anu Muhammad and his family members.
