A 50-year-old man and his 17-year-old son were killed in a building collapse at Patuatuli in the Old Town of Dhaka on Wednesday.

The deceased are Jahidul Islam and his son Shafiqul Islam, both are banana sellers, said local people.

Fire Service and Civil Defence headquarters control room duty officer Quamrul Hassan told New Age at 12:30am on Thursday that they managed to pull a body from the rubble and spotted another.

‘Fire service rescuers are trying to bring out the second body,’ he said.

Locals said though the two-storey building was shabby and abandoned, several banana traders had been residing on the first floor of the building and using the ground floor as a warehouse for the last several years.

Fire service officials said that the rooftop of the building completely collapsed while the ceiling of the first floor caved in partially at about 1:30pm.

Later, three fire engines went to the spot and started rescue operation, they said.
