Probe detects huge corruption

According to a probe report submitted in the High Court Division by the housing and public works ministry on Monday, huge corruption took place in procuring  pillows and articles for furnishing apartments for the Russian experts of the under construction Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant.

A bench of Justice Tariq ul Hakim and Justice Md Shohrowardi posted the matter for further orders on Sunday while

hearing a pending rule on the issue.

The housing and public works ministry instituted the probe by a committee after a daily Desh Rupantor exposed the huge corruption in procurements by the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant Project.

The probes detected that Tk 113.62 crore was  spent for household articles for furnishing 966 apartments for the Russian experts  though their actual price was Tk 77.22 crore.

The committee recommended taking action against 50 officials including engineer Masud Alam and recovering the excess sum from them and depositing it with the exchequer.

Each pillow was shown to have purchased for Tk 5,957 and Tk 760 was shown as the lifting charge for each pillow.

An electric stove was shown to have bought for  Tk 7,747 with an additional lifting charge of Tk 6,650.

The purchase price of an electric kettle was reportedly Tk 5313 and its lifting cost was Tk 2,945.

The public works department purchased a room cleaner for Tk 12,018 and lifted it at a cost of Tk 6,650.

An electric iron cost Tk 4,154 and its lifting cost Tk 2,945.

A television reportedly cost Tk 86,970 while its lifting cost Tk 7,698.

A refrigerator reportedly cost Tk 94,250 and its lifting cost Tk 12,521.
