Bangla Academy organised a commemorative programme on Dr Muhammad Shahidullah at Poet Shamsur Rahman Auditorium on Sunday.

The welcome speech was given by the director general of Bangla Academy Habibullah Shiraji.

‘Bangla Academy was founded on the principles of great thinkers like Dr Muhammad Shahidullah that is why the main building of the academy is named after him. Besides, the academy has published books on Dr Muhammad Shahidullah and his essays as well,’ said Shiraji.

Following the speech, professor Hakim Arif presented a keynote paper on Dr Muhammad Shahidullah.

‘Dr Muhammad Shahidullah had dedicated his entire life in order to acquire knowledge. He was a scholar of the highest order. His literary knowledge and his research on language made him popular not only in this country but all over the Indian subcontinent,’ mentioned Hakim.

 The programme was presided over by national professor Anisuzzaman.

‘Throughout his life Dr Muhammad Shahidullah has showed his unbound love for our mother tongue Bangla. We should remember him not only as a renowned linguist but also as someone who fought for the Bangla language. During the turbulent times he demanded recognition of Bangla as a state language of Pakistan,’ said Anisuzzaman.
