The High Court Division on Tuesday acquitted three death-row convicts of murdering 18-month old Dipjol at Bagerhat in April 2005.

The death-row inmates include Dipjol’s mother Latifa Begum, neighbour Nazma Bagum and her brother Monir Molla.

A bench of Justice Krishna Debnath and Justice Shahidul Karim pronounced the verdict after rejecting the death reference against the three condemned convicts.

They had appealed against their convictions by Bagerhat district and sessions judge’s court on  April 20, 2014.

According to the case record, Dipjol’s body was found in a pond next to their home on April 12, 2005.

In October 2005, on the basis of autopsy report, victim’s father Iku Biswas filed a murder case against the three.

Investigations revealed that Latifa, who was having an affair with neighbour Monir was planning to marry him and conspired with Nazma to murder Dipjol.

The court rejected their death reference finding the testimonies of the witnesses did not corroborate with the evidence, deputy attorney general MA Mannan Mohan told reporters later.

He said that the government would appeal against the HC verdict.
