Death toll from the devastating fire at Otto Spinning Limited reached six as five more bodies were recovered on Wednesday, a day after the fire gutted the mill at Nayanpur of Sreepur in Gazipur on Tuesday.
The deceased were Rasel, 45, son of Alal Uddin, a resident of Mymensingh, Anowar Hosen, 32, son of Jaynal Abedin, a resident in Gazipur, Shah Jalal, 25, son of Hasem Ali, a resident in Gazipur, textile engineer Selim Kabir, 42, son of Shamsul Haque, a resident Gazipur, Abir Rayhan, 21, son of Abul Kashem, a resident in Mymensingh and Sujon, 30, son of Keramat Sarder, a resident in Pabna.
Gzipur deputy commissioner SM Tarikul Islam said that a six-member committee headed by additional deputy commissioner Mohammad Shahinur Islam was formed to investigate the cause, damage, casualties and the other issues of the incident.
‘The committee was asked to submit the report by seven working days,’ he said.
DC declared Tk 25 lakh compensation for each of the dead victims, he said.
Fire service deputy assistant director in Gazipur Mohammad Akhteruzzaman said that firefighters recovered the charred bodies of five more people after extinguishing the blaze at night.
The bodies were sent to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examinations.
On Tuesday, security guard Russel was burned to death after the fire broke out at the spinning mill at about 2:00pm.
Eighteen fire engines put off the flames after 12 hours. Valuables, including cotton and machines, were destroyed in the fire.
Meanwhile, the mill authorities declared it closed for an indefinite period.
Workers said that the fire originated at a unit of Otto Spinning Ltd in Nayanpur area at about 2:30pm on Tuesday and it soon spread to other units of the factory.
