The Barishal District Bar Association has recommended the Bangladesh Bar council to suspend license of six legal practitioners for their alleged involvement with drug addiction and peddling.
The association at an emergency general meeting on Tuesday attended by more than two hundred members took the decision.
The association joint secretary Shamsujjaman Sohel said as per the decision of the meeting memberships of six lawyers have been suspended and allocation of their practicing chambers in the association premises also cancelled.
The accused six lawyers are Masum Khan, Tanvir Ahmed, Ziaur Rahman Rumi, Saidul Huq Khan Jewel, Riazuddin Milon, and Alam Rashid Likhon.
Excepting Alam Rashid Likhon, the five others were arrested by police in different cases of drug addiction and peddling. They continued the illegal act using their legal practitioner license and chamber and later secured bail from the court.
Obaidullah Saju, president of Barishal District Bar Association, said the emergency general meeting was convened as per application signed by 152 members of the association.
The decision of suspending the membership of Alam Rashid Likhon was taken as per allegation of Riazuddin Milon for trapping him in drug peddling case, Obaidullah added.
The decision of the meeting would be conveyed to the accused and sent to bar council immediately.
If any trial court declares them not-guilty, their membership would be reinstated, Obaidullah added.
