With Nigerian forward Sunday Chizoba’s presence uncertain, Abahani Limited will take on I-League outfit Minerva Punjab in their AFC Cup Group E final match at the Indira Gandhi Stadium in Guwahati today.
Sunday failed to travel with the team to India on Sunday after the Indian High commission denied him a visa over his Nigerian passport.
The match will begin at 4:30pm Bangladesh Standard Time.
‘His [Sunday] availability is still uncertain. If he can manage a visa by today [Tuesday] and can reach before the match, he will play the game,’ said Abahani team manager Satyajit Das Rupu from Guwahati on Tuesday.
‘If Sunday misses the game, forward Saad Uddin will replace him and defender Waly Faisal will take Saad’s position.’
Abahani are now leading the four-team group table with 10 points.
A win against Minerva will give the reigning Bangladesh Premier League champions a direct entry in the inter-zone play-off stage of the competition.
Even if Abahani lose today’s game they can finish as group champions.
In that case, second-placed Chennaiyin FC of India will have to drop points against Nepal’s Manang Marshyangdi Club in the day’s other match in Kathmandu.
Sunday faced the same fate when he was denied an Indian visa before their match against Chennaiyin FC in Ahmedabad on April 30.
At that time, the Nigerian was lucky enough to obtain a visa at the eleventh hour and play the match after reaching the venue on the match day.
