Abahani Limited reached Guwahati, India on Sunday without their forward Sunday Chizoba after the Nigerian failed to obtain an Indian visa to play in their final 2019 AFC Cup Group E match against Minerva Punjab.
Abahani, who are now leading the four-team group with 10 points, will take on I-League outfit at the Indira Gandhi Stadium in Guwahati, Assam on Wednesday.
A win against Minerva will give the reigning Bangladesh Premier League champions a direct entry in the next round of the AFC Cup.
But the visa denial to Sunday over his Nigerian passport by the Indian High commission was a big blow to the Sky Blue outfit
Sunday faced the same fate when he was denied an Indian visa before their match against Chennaiyin FC in Ahmedabad on April 30.
The Nigerian, however, was lucky enough to obtain a visa at the eleventh hour on that occasion and play the match after reaching at the venue on the match day.
‘It was still uncertain whether he [Sunday] would get the visa or not be able to travel to India,’ said Abahani team manager Satyajit Das Rupu over the phone from Guwahati.
‘Now it depends on luck. If he is not available, obviously, we have to replace anyone and that’s the reality.’
