A man was killed and five others sustained injuries in a factional clash of ruling Awami League at village Bashgram of Kumarkhali upazila in Kushtia on Thursday over establishing supremacy in the area.
The deceased was identified as Azam Munshi, 48, son of late Ayub Ali, a resident of the village.
Kumarkhali police officer-in-charge Mizanur Rahman told New Age that there had been a longstanding dispute between the supporters of AL Kushtia Zila Parisad’s member Mafiz and local AL leader Ali.
An altercation between the supporters of the two took place on Wednesday night.
Following the incident, the supporters of Ali attacked on Azam’s family with sharp weapons on Thursday morning, leaving Azam and five of his family members critically injured.
Later, local people took the injured to Kushtia General Hospital for treatment. Azam died while undergoing treatment at the hospital at about 9:00am, the OC said.
On information, a team of Kumarkhali police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.
Additional police forces were deployed in the area to avert any kind of untoward situation, the OC added.
