Renowned thespian Ataur Rahman’s 78th birthday was celebrated at the Studio Theatre Hall of the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy on Tuesday.
Manchosarothi Ataur Rahman Karmo Udzapan Parishad organised the event.
Prominent theatre and cultural personalities as well as budding theatre activists and enthusiasts congratulated Ataur Rahman on the occasion, which featured discussion, poem recitation and presentation of parts from famous plays he directed.
The event started off with recitations of Ataur Rahman’s poems, followed by presentation of plays directed by Ataur Rahman such as Shakespeare’s Hamlet, Macbeth and Troilus & Cressida as well as Narigon, Banglar Maati Banglar Jal and Tora Shob Joyodhani Kor.
In between the plays and recitations, eminent cultural personalities and thespians such as Nasiruddin Yousuff Bacchu, Shahiduzzaman Selim, Lucky Enam, Debaprasad Debnath and others congratulated the veteran thespian with flowers and gave speeches reminiscing of the times they spent with the maestro.
Lucky Enam a long time fellow thespian performed a song for Ataur Rahman and recalled the time when they worked together. ‘During a play in Dhaka Club, we were performing on a stage under a tin shed and it was raining cats and dogs. The audience couldn’t hear a single word. I remember Ata bhai saying “They can’t hear a single word, we might as well laugh.” After hearing this all of us started to laugh and the audience thought it was a part of the play,’ Lucky recalled.
Apart from this, a portrait of the thespian was presented to him. His family members also spoke at the event. Ataur Rahman thanked the organisers and stated, ‘It seems as I’m getting older, the love from people is also multiplying. I am grateful to all of you.’
