Mercantile Bank to start Islamic banking service

Mercantile Bank Limited is going to start Islamic banking service soon, said its chairman AKM Shaheed Reza on Sunday.
While speaking at a press conference at its Motijheel head office, he also said that the bank would open a new window to attract the customers who wanted Islamic banking service.
Shaheed said that a huge number of people demanded Islamic banking service as 90 per cent of the total population were Muslim.
But the secular position of the bank would not change, vowed the chairman.
Marking 20th founding anniversary of the bank, its honoured five individuals and institutions and awarded another five young bankers, who would be given reception today at a hotel in the capital.
Bank’s managing director and chief executive officer Quamrul Islam Chowdhury, vice-chairman ASM Feroz Alam, chairman of the executive committee Akram Hossain (Hymayun), Mercantile Bank Foundation chairman M Amanullah, Mercantile Bank Securities Limited chairman Mohd Selim and directors Morshed Alam, Anwarul Haque and Mosharref Hossain were present, among others, at the conference.
Mercantile Bank was founded by late Mohammad Abdul Jalil on June 2, in 1999, is now serving people by its 139 branches and 169 ATM booths across the country.
The bank also continues banking in 33 countries with 635 banks across the world.
‘Mercantile Bank Sammanona 2019’ awardees are - Tofael Ahmed in education, Captain Shahabuddin Ahmed in freedom fighter and research on Liberation War category, Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institution in economics and economic research, Abul Kashem of Abul Khair Group in industry and commerce and Mosharraf Hossain Khan in swimming.
The bank also awarded five young bankers as ‘MTB Young Bankers Appreciation Award-2019.’
The awardees are - Uzzwal Kumar Singha of IFIC Bank Ltd, Sirajul Islam of AB Bank Ltd, AKM Hossainuzzaman of Mercantile Bank Ltd, Tawhid Khan Majlish of Mutual Trust Bank Ltd and Mohammad Arafat Hossain of Bank Asia Ltd.
