Nigerian forward Chinedu Matthew scored a second-half winner as Arambagh Krira Sangha beat
Chattogram Abahani 1-0 in their Bangladesh Premier League match at the Bangabandhu National Stadium on Sunday.
In the day’s second match at the same venue, Sheikh Russell Krira Chakra crushed Mohammedan Sporting Club by 4-2 goals.
After a barren first-half, Matthew broke the deadlock by scoring in the 63rd minute with a powerful right-footed drive from the top of the box.
Forward Arifur Rahman provided a headed pass from the midfield into the left flank and Matthew beat Chattogram Abahani’s Nigerian defender Mufta Lawal before firing the ball into the net.
The port-city outfit could have levelled the margin in the 87th minute but forward Rashedul Islam’s shot from inside the box went whiskered past the crosspiece.
With the result, Arambagh remained in fifth position of the table with 23 points from 16 matches while Chattagram Abahani were seventh place with 18 points from same number of outings.
In the second match, Nigerian forward Raphael Odoyin scored a brace in the 70th and 87th minutes for Sheikh Russell while local forward Biplu Ahmed and Nigerian defender Ndukaku Udoka Alison scored in the 10th and 18th minutes respectively.
For Mohammedan forward Toklis Ahmed scored two goals in the 15th and 49th minutes.
With the day’s result, Sheikh Russell maintained the third place in the league with 36 points from 15 matches while Mohammedan remained in 10th place with 13 points from 16 matches.
