A suspected drug peddler was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with police on Hossainpur-Lalmati road of Uttar Bijoypur area under Sadar South upazila in Cumilla early Tuesday.
The deceased, Bappi Sadar, of Uttar Rampur area under the upazila, was named in at least 11 cases, police said.
With the latest casualty, the number of deaths in the on-going nationwide anti-drug drive since May 15, 2018 now stands at 398.
Sadar South Police Station inspector Kamal Krishna Dhar said they conducted an anti-drug drive in Uttar Bijoypur area early Tuesday.
Sensing presence of police, the suspected drug peddlers opened fire at police and police also retaliated by firing, triggering a gunfight, he claimed.
As the gunfight ended, police searched the area and found bullet-hit Bappi in a critical condition and took him to Comilla Medical College Hospital, where on duty doctors declared him dead, he said. He claimed that police seized two daggers and 1200 pieces of Yaba tablets from the spot.
