An alleged drug peddler was killed in a reported gunfight with Border Guard Bangladesh members at Fakirganj of Pirganj in Thakurgaon early Thursday.

The deceased was Monirul Islam Babul, 35, son of Maidul Islam of Dinajpur.

Lieutenant Colonel Gazi Nahid Uz Zaman, commanding officer of BGB 42, said that a BGB team arrested Babul on Wednesday night along with 112 bottles of Phensedyl. Later, the team along with Babul raided Fakirganj area at around 2:00am to recover more drugs.

Sensing their presence, Babul’s associates opened fire on them, forcing them to fire back that triggered a gunfight, Gazi Nahid said adding that at one stage, Babul was caught in the line of fire and died while others managed to escape.

The team also recovered 75 bottles of Phensedyl, a firearm, Tk 22,000 in cash and a sharp weapon from the spot, he said.

Later, Pirganj police recovered the body and sent it to Thakurgaon General Hospital for autopsy.

No criminal records, however, were confirmed against Monirul Islam Babul, when this correspondent contacted Pirganj officer-in-charge Bajlur Rashid and Dinajpur’s Birganj police station officer-in-charge Shakila Parvin.
