Youth killed in Cumilla ‘gunfight’

A suspected ‘drug peddler’ was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with police at Palpara Bridge Cumilla sadar upazila early Friday.
The victim Zakir Hossain, 28, was a resident of Shasangacha area of ​​the city.
Cumilla Kotwali police officer-in-charge Mohammed Abu Salam Mia said that Zakir was a top drug peddler and was accused in at least 17 cases.
He said that the police conducted an operation at Palpara Bridge around 3:00am to arrest Zakir. Zakir and his associates opened fire to police and the police also retaliated with gunshots in self-defence.
Zakir was taken to Comilla Medical College Hospital as he sustained critical injuries in the gunfight.
The duty doctor of the hospital declared him dead there.
Police recovered 1,200 pieces of Yaba, one light gun and two bullets from the spot.
In the anti-drug drive, at least 373 people were killed in alleged gun fights with the law enforcement agencies until May 7, 2019 since May 4, 2018, according to human rights organisations.
